What does the 4th of July mean to me, you ask?

What comes to your mind when the 4th of July is near? Barbecues right? Like most Americans, the 4th of July has become a day to get together with friends and family, throws some dogs on the grill and watch fireworks. The 4th has an entirely different meaning to me- the daughter of an American Soldier. The mission of our soldiers has been under a lot of scrutiny over the past several years. We are here to honor, respect, celebrate and SUPPORT our soldiers. They are dodging bullets for OUR flag, for OUR freedom.

The 4th of July is a time to remember those who have fallen, those who have been wounded, and those who have sacrificed all to fight for our nation. As an American, I believe it is my duty to be a warrior here at home for our troops. They have given us rights that people in other countries don’t have. Even simple things like being able to walk down any street you want to. These are freedoms we take for granted. When was the last time you thanked a soldier? You’d be surprised how much of an impact a simple, “Thanks for your service” can do.

My dad is part of the 249th Engineer Battalion stationed in Fort Belvoir, Virginia and currently deployed overseas. I’m so proud of him. He is very honest with us about the struggles they face in the Middle East. Not when it comes to the war, but when it comes to living everyday life without the comforts of home. These soldiers are so brave and are experiencing something we will never understand. This is what the 4th means to me; Sacrifice, honor, duty and commitment- to our country and to our flag. “This we’ll defend” is the US Army motto. Those are the words I will think about on the 4th of July.
