This will probably be the title of the book that will be written by a
ghostwriter with Casey Anthony’s name slapped on the front. I wonder
what the Lifetime movie will be called… “The Sacrifices we make for a
shot of tequila”? Okay, okay.. You’re probably lumping me in with the
group of people who “publicly convicted” Casey Anthony. No, I am not in
any way related to or affiliated with Nancy Grace- I promise. All I
know, is I have been following this case since the news broke out. I
have followed the trial and gone over both the prosecution and the
defense’s sides and this is 100% my opinion based on the information
we’ve all been provided.
So by now, we all know what happened. In
July 2008, Caylee Marie Anthony was reported missing. Cindy Anthony,
Casey’s mom, called the police to report that Casey had stolen her car.
She called the police again to report that Casey said Caylee had been
missing for weeks. Casey was taken into custody the next day after
deputies said she told them she worked at Universal Orlando Resort, but
when they took her there Casey admitted she lied to them. She also lied
to them about who had been taking care of Caylee. She had been telling
her parents that a nanny, Zenaida Gonzalez, had been watching Caylee
while she was at work. Gonzalez said she did not know, nor had she ever
met Casey or Caylee Anthony. At this point, she was charged with lying
to investigators and interfering with an investigation as well as child
neglect. Casey’s attorney came out and said there were other suspects in
the case, but were not providing anymore information. Casey was
released from prison toward the end of August and re-arrested a week
later after surveillance videos showed Casey using forged checks. Casey
was eventually released again, but then turned herself in after new
charges unrelated to the disappearance came up.
I won’t go over
the next year and a half of events in detail. During this time, there
were missed scheduled appointments by multiple members of the Anthony
family. The original judge in the case stepped down. Jurors were
selected and the “public conviction” began.
The whole point of a
trial is not to prove guilt or innocence. It really all comes down to
which side can prove their story better. Who has the most evidence?
Who’s testimonies and closing arguments are more believable? One big
factor in this trial is that it was being tried as a capital murder
case.. This means death penalty. That’s huge, and honestly, I’m not sure
if I would have rendered a guilty verdict with the information
provided.
The problem for the prosecution is that they had tons of
evidence- circumstantial evidence. Yes, Casey had a history of lying to
the police and to the world essentially, but there was not really any
factual evidence. They had suspicious odors, evidence of chloroform-
which Casey said she would use to make Caylee fall asleep because she
had trouble sleeping , commonly used laundry bags and the fact that
Casey, did not report the disappearance of her daughter until thirty one
days after she’d been missing.
As the story goes, Caylee Anthony
accidentally drowned in the family’s pool. Then months later the body
was found in a swampy area. Sooo… what happened? Why wait so long to
report her missing? Why were there Google searches about “neck
breaking,” “shovel,” and “how to make chloroform”??? Are you kidding me?
Come on people. This has “if the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit”
written all over it. They even brought in a K-9 cadaver dog named Gerus
who indicated human decomposition in the trunk of Casey’s car.
After
349 pieces of evidence, spectator outbursts, tears and closing
arguments the jury went into a 10 hour and 40 minute deliberation. Casey
Anthony is found not guilty on all counts except providing false
evidence to a law enforcement officer. Here’s what I think happened:
The
jury is sitting in a room with a ton of evidence that most of us would
look at and agree that Casey has to be guilty. The duct tape was the
same duct tape that was found being used in the Anthony home. The Google
searches alone were startling. She didn’t call the police immediately
when Caylee supposedly drowned in the family pool. She lied to police.
She has a history of fraudulent activity. All signs point to Casey! But,
with the death penalty on the table, with someone’s life in your hands
and nothing actually putting Casey at the scene of the crime… would you
be able to raise your hand and say she’s guilty?? There are way too many
holes in the prosecutions case. I personally think she’s guilty, but I
don’t think she acted alone- nor do I think this crime warrants the
death penalty. There’s just something about George Anthony that rubs me
the wrong way. The whole Anthony clan, in fact. Unfortunately, there is
no justice for little Caylee Anthony today. Someone, whoever it is, is
walking around carrying the weight of what they’ve done on their
shoulders. If it was Casey, she will never be brought forth for the
crime. She will never have to answer to any of us for it. She can’t be
convicted of it or anything else related to this trial. It’s really
unfortunate.
So what happens now? Well, already there are death
threats against people wanting to interview her. I’m sure she’s received
a few herself. She will probably get a book deal and a movie. Like I
said before, she won’t actually write the book, but she’ll receive the
credit. In a few months, I am sure Lifetime or Oxygen will buy the
rights to make a movie about the “Trial of the Century”. Through all of
this, little Caylee Marie Anthony has been forgotten. Both the
prosecution and the defense have failed to recognize that this is about
justice for Caylee, not determining who has the better case. So, RIP
little angel.. You’re in my thoughts and prayers always!
